When this was first published last Thanksgiving weekend, baseball’s opening day seemed a long winter away. Yesterday it still seemed a long way off, as the Mets postponed their scheduled home opener, because, the Wednesday press release said, rain was in the forecast. I live ten minutes at most from Citi Field, and it did not rain at all in Queens yesterday afternoon. Whatever. It’s a Good Friday afternoon for a baseball game. The rule changes in baseball that have sped up the game (good) means that the greatest power trio since the Jimi Hendrix Experience: Gary Cohen, Ron Darling, and Keith Hernandez, may have less time for riffing about rock. I think Gary dropped “won’t get fooled again” on the road in Miami or Milwaukee last week, but the game moved too fast for anyone to run with that riff. Play ball!
