When I came back to Long Island after graduating from the University of Colorado in 1972, future utterly unplanned, I sensed something different about our house. I hung up my winter jacket in the hallway closet and noticed the men's coats missing. "Where's dad's stuff?" I asked my mother. "Oh, he moved out. We're getting divorced."

Well, thanks for telling me. I figured I needed to do something different that summer, so I took advantage of my mom's empty condo in North Miami Beach. My friend Elliott from East Meadow had a family tragedy he wanted to write a book about, so we decided to drive to Florida and work on the story together. In South Florida, I came across an excellent local rock magazine called Zoo World, published in Fort Lauderdale. There was a buzz in Lauderdale thanks to a first rate rock station, WSHE. Florida's Blues Image had a big radio hit a few years earlier called "Ride Captain Ride," and having a first-rate rock magazine gave the potential scene a lift.
