Wayne, I think you glossed over her first album, “Early Years.” It wasn’t as on-target artistically as “Eli”, but it had many of best and most beloved songs on it. Did you ever see the very strange film she made on a boat? I was obsessed with her and saw her perform at Carnegie Hall and at The Troubadour.
Hi Billy, I was thinking about writing to you today if I needed a quote, and also our ongoing conversation about songs. I had a feeling you were a fan, and we likely discovered her at the same time and place. But I can't find an album "Early Years" in her discography. Perhaps you were thinking of the Verve album (prod: Milt Okun) "More Than a New Discovery," later released as "The First Songs?" I had to go old but not too deep to give the less "obsessed" reader some context for the main topic, the all-but-forgotten 1993 album "Walk the Dog..." That was the focus of the brief story and interview, and which I hadn't heard in the almost 30 years since it came out. I think it is worth (re) discovering. Also, it is shocking how many people don't know who Laura Nyro is at all, which cannot stand, man, it cannot stand!
I meant “The First Songs”. Do you know the weird surreal black and white film I’m talking about?
